Dogs are known to be one of the most owned animal in America. Is it because they are known to be man’s best friend or is it because they were one of the first pets to ever be owned? We surveyed and asked many people about their dogs and asked them what is their dogs age and if they can do tricks or not. Dogs have always been man’s best friend since long ago.

On Saturday, April 18 at Summerfield Park at 10 am to 1 pm there will be the Big Bark Party. It’s free to get in and no pre-registration required. There are dog and owner contest including the waggiest tail, longest ears, longest kiss, best trick, best costume, quickest ball retrieval, and finally pet/owner look alike. There will be prizes for the contest winners, but you have to be 18 or older to take part in these events.

“Yes, I do own a dog. His name is Baloo, like the bear from the Jungle Book. He’s a one year old St. Bernard. He can sit and lie down, but he doesn’t actually do any tricks, because he’s really lazy and likes to sleep,” says Sapana Gautam, a junior at RC.

Dogs are known to be the most owned pets in the world. We have some peculiar dogs that can do some really cool things. You may have seen dogs that can do cool tricks, such as doing flips for a treat or balancing on a ball, well there are dog owners whose dogs can do that. Dogs are loved and while some are small or young, others are big or old.

“I love dogs. I own a German shepherd, who is only two years old. He plays ball and can fetch, but can’t do anything else,” says Beverly Tjokrosoeharto, a freshman at RC.

According to American Veterinary Medical Association or AVMA, about 36.5% of people own a dog, that rounds up the numbers to about 43,346,000 dog owners and since most dog owners have more than one dog, the AVMA rounded up the number to be about 69,926,000 dogs in United States alone.

We surveyed 100 RC students, if they have a dog and if they do what breed it was. 76% have a dogs and 24% don’t. The top three breeds are Pit bulls, Chihuahuas, and German Shepherds.

“I have a black lab who is ten years old. He can high-five people,” says Nick Braden, a freshman at RC.
